Compare the presentations. Give each presentation an overall score using the rubric.

For this discussion, you will first watch two TED talks and evaluate them according to the Georgia Academic Decathlon rubric. The rubric is available in the “additional materials” folder.
Here are the two talks:
1. Tim Harford: How frustration can make us more creative
2. Manoush Zomorodi: How boredom can lead to your most brilliant ideas
Be sure that you watch these two talks and not others by the same speakers. If the links above do not work, you can go to Ted.com and search for the presentations using the speaker’s name or talk title.
Next, post a critique of both presentations. In your post, compare the presentations. Give each presentation an overall score using the rubric. Your critique should be at least 300 words.

What is the research, how was it appropriated, and was it successful?

Watch Ben Godacre’s TedTalk, “Battling Bad Science.”
1. In your own words, explain the connection between what we are learning about information literacy and what Godacre is talking about?
2. Find and explain your own example of research being “spun” or twisted to serve a purpose. What is the research, how was it appropriated, and was it successful?
It was discovered later that the study was not only flawed, but parts of it were based on lies about the condition of the children participating.

Think about it this way– 25 points is the same as an A+. Are you putting forth an A+ effort? Students putting forth a high quality post but a lack of effort at conversation are more likely to earn a B in discussion than an A. This will remain true throughout the course. Please plan your time accordingly.

Do you notice any nuances or subtle strategies in the teacher’s language performance?

 Reflecting on Translingual Language Learning

Choose one of the following:

Look closely at Sections 305 and 306 of Proposition 227, and compare the amendments that Proposition 58 makes to these two sections. What was changed and why?
Select one of the SABE Storytime videos, and analyze the teacher’s use of Spanish and English in communicating with the student and/or with their parents. Do you notice any nuances or subtle strategies in the teacher’s language performance?

Once you’ve familiarized yourself with the MLA Language Map and Data Center, compose a simple research question that you can use these tools to help you answer. For example, you might ask “which zip codes in San Luis Obispo are the most linguistically superdiverse?” Then, using the Map and Data Center, compile a list of the top five zip codes. You might also document the relative number of languages spoken in each, and the most widely spoken language after English and Spanish.

Why does intersectionality matter in development and what are the outcomes for projects which do not take an intersectional approach? Give at least TWO examples in your answer.

How COVID-19 has affected my life with work, school, mental/physical health, & family.Discuss

The following events can be written about: focus on a single event (the time I walked around at a convention—as a twelve-year-old—with the back of my dress tucked into my tights) or a series of related events (the time with the tights plus three or four other embarrassing experiences of adolescence). Focusing on one event allows you to really develop a single incident, focusing on the details, setting, and results of the event while focusing on several allows you to make a larger point about the events when viewed collectively (in my case, the pain of adolescence).
